Swiss officials have confirmed that several men “of Syrian origin” were caught and arrested on suspicion of transporting “explosives and toxic gases.” Authorities also believe that the items were going to be used on a terrorist attack targeting the city of Geneva.

According to France 24, the men arrested Friday are charged with “manufacture, concealment and transport of explosives and toxic gases.” The two are also being held in suspicion of violating a Swiss law prohibiting “groups like Al-Qaeda, Islamic State and similar organizations.”

The two men were arrested “in the Geneva region,” although a specific location was not given. Traces of explosives were found in their car. Whether or not the men were refugees from the current Syrian migrant crisis was unknown, although their links to the Islamic State group raised that possibility.

Earlier in the week, the Swiss newspaper Le Matin reported that Swiss authorities had been tipped off to the plot by the CIA. The paper also published a picture of the two suspects among four men giving the one-finger Islamic State group salute.

Intelligence for the other two cities, Chicago and Toronto, was reportedly less specific than it was for Geneva. The FBI indicated at the time that it had been informed of the threat for Chicago.

“While we are aware of no specific or credible threat to Chicago at this time, the FBI remains vigilant,” a spokesman for the bureau’s Chicago office told reporters.

“We are in contact with our federal law enforcement partners, as we always are, and we are not aware of any credible or specific threats to Chicago. Residents should always remain vigilant, and if you see something, say something,” said Adam Collins, a spokesman for Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, added.

It is unknown what link, if any, these threats had to the suspects arrested in Switzerland on Friday.
