As each new outrage or controversy involving a Muslim washes across America, one thing appears to be constant: CAIR is there. But one GOP candidate finds the Muslim group to be suspicious enough that he wants them investigated, and his idea is sure to cause liberals much heartburn.

Dr. Ben Carson is now calling for closer scrutiny of the Council of American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), especially after the group came out in full support of the family of the jihadists who murdered 14 people in the San Bernardino terror attacks.

Carson released a statement calling for an investigation into whether or not CAIR is a “supporter of terrorism.”

“The Department of State should designate the Muslim Brotherhood and other organizations that propagate or support Islamic terrorism as terrorist organizations, and fully investigate the Council on American-Islamic Relations as an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood and a supporter of terrorism,” Carson said in his press release.

CAIR didn’t remain quiet after Carson’s suggestion. After Carson released his statement, the Muslim group criticized the former neurosurgeon.

“Ben Carson is a failing candidate grasping at straws and seeking payback for CAIR’s previous criticism of his anti-Muslim bigotry and his lack of commitment to uphold the Constitution,” CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper said. “He found that Islamophobia gave him a boost in the past, so he is trying it again.”

The American Muslim group, though, has long been under scrutiny for connections to terrorism. In fact, even the FBI has tied the organization to terror groups. CAIR was linked to the Holy Land Foundation, a group with known terror ties.

A few years ago, members of Congress asked the Department of Justice to clarify just what those ties were. The DOJ responded with a letter outlining some of those ties.

In a letter to Representative Sue Myrick, R-N.C., the U.S. Department of Justice admitted that the evidence in the hands of the government shows “a relationship among CAIR, individual CAIR founders, and the Palestine Committee. Evidence was also introduced that demonstrated a relationship between the Palestine Committee and HAMAS, which was designated as a terrorist organization in 1995.”
