As reported last week by Western Journalism, Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., will endorse Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., in the Republican race for the party’s nomination.

“Marco is a rock solid conservative and a strong leader we can trust,” Gowdy said in a statement to reporters prior to Monday’s formal endorsement. “I look forward to campaigning in Iowa with him, and introducing my good friend to voters across the state.”

Gowdy will accompany Rubio at several events in Iowa, a critical early primary state.

Rubio currently places third or fourth in many polls, consistently behind Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz, and, at times, trailing Dr. Ben Carson. Rubio has also been slipping in the polls. A CNN national poll released last week had Rubio at 10 percent, a two-point drop since November. A national Quinnipiac poll showed Rubio down five points to 12 percent, and a Fox News poll showed Rubio losing three points to 11 percent. In all three cases, Trump and Cruz rose.

Trump had harsh words for the endorsement by Gowdy, chair of the House Select Committee on Benghazi.

“In total (the committee) was not good for Republicans and the country. I mean beyond Republicans, it was bad for the country. I hope he does a whole lot better for Marco,” Trump, said of Gowdy on Fox News’ Fox and Friends Sunday night.
