During a recent interview with MSNBC’s Al Sharpton, controversial Arizona lawman Joe Arpaio defended his investigation into the legitimacy of Barack Obama’s birth certificate. In a discussion about Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump’s outspokenness on the issue, Sharpton asked his guest if his mission to disprove Obama is ongoing.

“Are you and Trump still on this birther thing?” he asked the Maricopa County sheriff. “I mean, do you really believe the president of the United States was not born in Hawaii?”

Shying away from speculation, Arpaio responded with what he said he could prove.

“I don’t care where he was born,” he responded. “I said that from Day One. I said [his birth certificate is] a fraudulent document.”

The double standard by which Obama is allowed to perpetuate his fabricated autobiography, Arpaio explained, is his motivation to expose it.

“It’s a fake document,” he continued. “If you had a fake document, you’d be in jail tomorrow. That’s all.”

When Sharpton asked why there was no proof that Obama’s paperwork had been fabricated, Arpaio shot back:

We established it, but nobody wants to look at it. They avoid it. And I’ve had two major press conferences two or three years ago.

To conclude the interview, Sharpton accused Arpaio of representing “the other side” of the immigration debate, asking the outspoken official if border security will be a driving issue in the 2016 election. Terror fears, Arpaio predicted, will ensure that it is.
