Donald Trump, who remains the GOP front-runner in the in the presidential primary race, issued likely Democrat nominee Hillary Clinton a sober warning.

“The Hillary Clinton staged event yesterday was pathetic. Be careful Hillary as you play the war on women or women being degraded card,” Trump tweeted Wednesday.

The battle between Trump and Clinton has escalated as the two candidates issued personal attacks on the other’s campaign in stump speeches. The latest episode involves women and bullying.

Trump made a comment that Clinton “got schlonged” in the 2008 election, using a Yiddish word for “penis.” Trump was referring to President Barack Obama’s overwhelming embrace by the public once he set his campaign in motion, soundly moving Clinton out of the front-runner position. Trump said the phrase was common slang in political circles.

Clinton took offense to the comment, but, according to the Daily Mail, it was what happened at a town hall meeting in Keota, Iowa, that pushed Trump’s buttons, leading to his claim the incident was staged. Fifth-grader Hannah Tandy, the daughter of a local elected official, asked a question that opened the door for Clinton to address Trump’s comment.

“What are you going to do about bullying?” Tandy asked, which provoked a hug from Clinton.

Clinton said that “we are not treating each other with the respect and the – the care that we should show toward each other.”

Then she launched into a carefully targeted attack on Trump.

“And that’s why it’s important to stand up to bullies wherever they are, and why we shouldn’t let anybody bully his way into the presidency,” Clinton said.

While she told an Iowa newspaper she wouldn’t “respond to him personally,” Clinton did just that at the town hall meeting, according to the Daily Mail, stating “I really deplore the tone of his campaign,” and criticizing Trump for “going after groups of people with hateful, incendiary rhetoric.”

“I don’t know that he has any boundaries at all. His bigotry, his bluster, his bullying have become his campaign. And he has to keep sort of upping the stakes and going even further,” Clinton said.

Clinton has been on the other side of attacks on women. According to news accounts, she masterminded media attacks on women alleging sexual assault against her husband, Bill Clinton, during the 1992 campaign. One of the names she gave them was “bimbo eruptions.”
