According to emerging reports, Ammon Bundy and eight other armed protesters have been arrested. Reports indicate that shots have been fired. Two are reported to have been shot, though it is unclear who the injured parties are. The shots reportedly rang-out as protesters drove to a community meeting in John Day, about 70 miles away. FBI agents, Oregon State troopers and various other law enforcement agencies made the traffic stop. It is unclear who fired first.

Bundy has served as the leader of a group of armed protesters who have occupied a wildlife refuge in Eastern Oregon to protest the claim of ownership of the majority of land in Western states.

As PolitiStick has previously reported, the federal government lays claim to roughly 85% of Nevada, the home state of the Bundy Family famous for backing-down the federal government in a dispute in 2014. 53% of Oregon’s lands are claimed by the federal government.

The protesters took over the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Burns, Oregon, over three weeks ago in protest of the re-incarceration of two ranchers, Dwight and Steven Hammond, for burning lands adjacent to their property when the federal government would not. As a result of the government’s inaction, wildfires threatened the ranchers’ land and when the duo orchestrated controlled burns, they were sentenced under an anti-terrorism statute. After being released, the Obama Department of Justice declared that the duo had not served sufficient sentences and re-imprisoned them for the same crime under the same charge.

The Bundy occupation was in protest of the treatment of the Hammonds and in protest of the abusive relationship maintained between the federal government and Western states.

Reports have not indicated who was among those arrested and several sources, including the Daily Mail and Oregon Live, have been unable to independently confirm the arrests or the injuries.

if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, and the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.
