NEW YORK – Fr. Frank Pavone, National Director of Priests for Life, today praised Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin for signing into law legislation that will provide pregnant women, students, and the general public with information “for the purpose of achieving an abortion-free society.”
“States promote life by discouraging smoking, illicit drug use, and drunk driving,” said Fr. Pavone. “Promoting an abortion-free society is entirely consistent with this ethic. Oklahoma’s Governor and legislature have performed a great public service by establishing these new life-affirming public information sources.”
The law, known as the Humanity of the Unborn Child Act, authorizes the state health department to make available online scientifically verifiable information on the unborn child’s development, described at two-week intervals. The government website will also list public and private agencies and services available to help pregnant mothers and those with newborns.
In addition, the measure establishes a student curriculum to be made available to local school districts on a voluntary basis that’s “consistent with the provisions of the Humanity of the Unborn Child Act.” Public service announcements that “consistently teach that abortion kills a living human being” will also be produced.
“Oklahoma – and all states – have a compelling interest in promoting public health,” added Fr. Pavone. “I can think of no greater way to do that than to create an abortion-free society. I strongly urge the legislature to appropriate the funds necessary to put these programs into action.”
