(Just don’t call it a bailout) House passes Puerto Rico rescue

How great of the House. Thanks for setting a precedent for states like Illinois, and California which will soon see shortfalls due to overly generous government worker pensions and will soon also be begging Washington to save their overspending posteriors. By which we mean Cali and Illinois will be begging Washington to force US taxpayers to save them. I mean if lowly Puerto Rico can get a “rescue” surely mighty California can get one.

You bet. Congress is here to help.

(From The Hill)

The passage of the carefully crafted compromise is a significant win for Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), who was an early and active supporter of the legislation, and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and the White House, which also pushed the package.

In a rare move, both Ryan and Pelosi took to the House floor to urge support for the legislation, shooting for broad bipartisan support to encourage speedy action through the Senate.

Ryan made a moral case for the bill, arguing that the island’s 3.5 million residents — who are American citizens — need Congress’s support.

“The Puerto Rican people are our fellow Americans. They pay our taxes. They fight in our wars,” he said. “We cannot allow this to happen.”

And remember, it’s “carefully crafted.” Those are the official spin words for this particular piece of legislation. Watch for them in tonight’s propa…, er I mean, news broadcasts.
