After learning that his wife had hired a hit man to kill him, a Texas man teamed up with police to catch his wife red-handed.
Houston-area boxing coach Ramon Sosa told KTXH he once thought he had married his dream girl.
He considered himself lucky to have met Maria “LuLu” Sosa and been married to her for six years.
However, Ramon said Maria had asked him for a divorce in 2015. Their marriage was on the rocks at the time due to financial struggles, as the gym they had opened together was struggling.
Rather than wait for the divorce to be finalized in court, Ramon said Maria took matters into her own hands and tried to have him killed.
Ramon said she was going to pay a hit man $2,000 to kill him, but things took a turn when the man Maria spoke to about carrying out the hit was actually a friend of her husband.
“Unwittingly, she had approached a guy called Gustavo to see if he could organize the hit, without realizing we were friends,” Ramon told the U.K. Daily Mail. “Gustavo told me she was clearly serious and had held her fingers to her head, in a gun-firing gesture.”
After his friend alerted him to Maria’s plot, Ramon teamed up with Houston authorities to catch her. Their plan was right out of a Hollywood action movie, as it included a staged death and lots of deception.

The plan involved using Gustavo to catch Maria in the act of the crime.
“Then we devised a plan, for him to wear a wire and tape her offering money to have me killed, before turning the evidence over to the cops,” Ramon said.
Gustavo told Maria that he knew two hit men who would do the job for her.
After Gustavo recorded Maria admitting that she wanted to pay to have her husband killed, he took the recording back to the detectives.
Police helped Ramon fake his own death and took pictures of him lying in a grave pretending to be dead.
In the pictures, Ramon was shirtless with a fake gunshot wound to the side of his head.
Detectives then arranged for an undercover police officer posing as a hit man to meet with Maria.
The officer met Maria on July 20, 2015, in a parking lot, where he presented her with the pictures of Ramon appearing to be dead.
The plan worked, as Maria paid the officer for what she thought was her husband’s murder. Ramon claimed his wife responded with laughter.

Maria was arrested and eventually pleaded guilty to second-degree felony solicitation of murder. In 2016, she was sentenced to 20 years in prison, according to the Spring Observer.
“I think (the sentence) is fair for what she did,” Ramon said after Maria’s trial. “I’m just happy that it’s over with. I’ve got to move on.”
